Grille shutter · Engine code

Active grille shutter codes

Your car has motorized flaps behind the front grille that open and close to manage airflow. The engine computer has detected that they're stuck, not moving correctly, or not responding.

Urgency
Low urgency
Can I keep driving?
Usually safe to keep driving. Watch the temperature gauge, especially towing or in hot weather: if shutters are stuck closed, the engine can run warmer than normal. Stuck open mostly costs a little fuel economy.
Most common fix
Clearing a jam, or replacing the shutter actuator motor

What this code means

Active grille shutters close at highway speed to make the car more aerodynamic and help the engine warm up faster in cold weather. They open when the engine needs cooling airflow through the radiator.

A small electric motor (the actuator) drives the flaps, and the engine computer monitors their position. When the shutters don't reach the commanded position or the circuit has a problem, it sets one of these codes. P059F means shutter “A” is stuck or not performing (stuck off), P05A0 means stuck on, P05A2–P05A5 are control circuit faults, P059A–P059E point to the position sensor, and the P05AE/P05AF and P05B_ codes are the same faults on a second shutter (“B”). U0284 means the computer lost communication with the shutter module.

Because the shutters sit right behind the grille, they're exposed to road debris, ice and minor front-end impacts — which is where most failures start.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Check engine light, often with no change in how the car drives
  • Engine temperature higher than usual (shutters stuck closed)
  • Slightly worse highway fuel economy (shutters stuck open)
  • Clicking or buzzing from behind the grille when the car starts

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Ice or debris jamming the flaps
Very common in winter. The code may clear itself once the shutters thaw and move freely.
  2. Failed actuator motor
The motor wears out or its internal gears strip.
  3. Broken flaps or linkage
Often after a minor front-end bump, a curb, or road debris.
  4. Wiring or connector damage
The harness runs through the front of the car and can corrode or get damaged in a repair.
  5. Shutter not recalibrated after repair
Some vehicles need a relearn procedure after the shutter, bumper or battery is replaced.

What to check first

  1. Look through the grille with a flashlight for ice, leaves, plastic or broken flaps.
  2. If it's freezing out, let the car warm up in a garage and see if the code clears after a drive.
  3. Turn the ignition on and listen for the actuator cycling at startup. Silence can mean a dead motor or no power.
  4. Inspect the actuator connector for corrosion, especially after front-end work.
  5. If parts were replaced recently, ask a shop to run the manufacturer's shutter relearn with a scan tool.

Typical repairs and rough cost

RepairTypical costNotes
Grille shutter actuator$150–$500Some are reachable from below; others need the bumper cover removed.
Complete shutter assembly$300–$900When flaps or the frame are broken.
Wiring repair$100–$250

Rough US shop prices for parts and labor. Your cost depends on the vehicle, the parts brand and local labor rates.

Common questions

Can I drive with a grille shutter code?

Usually yes. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge, especially in summer or when towing. If the engine starts running hot, stop and get it checked.

Why did the code appear after a cold night?

Ice can freeze the flaps in place. The actuator tries to move them, can't, and sets the code. It often clears once the shutters thaw.

Will removing the shutters fix it?

The code would come back because the computer still expects them. On many vehicles the shutters also affect engine warm-up and cooling strategy, so repair or replace rather than remove.
